Large crowds drawn to Chateauguay’s St. Patrick’s Day parade

CHATEAUGUAY, Que. – Thousands of people lined the streets of Chateauguay Sunday to take in the city’s 12th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The sun was shining, people were smiling and cheering and the bagpipes were playing.

The music was so catchy that an aspiring bagpipe player even joined the fray.

There are an estimated 12,000 people of Irish descent living in Chateauguay, representing 25 per cent of the population.

But beyond celebrating one’s Irish heritage and culture, the event also builds a sense of community.

“It brings everybody together so I’m very happy,” Nathalie Simon, Chateauguay’s mayor, said. “It’s a wonderful day.”
