Elevated levels of lead have been found in the drinking water of households in Pemberton, B.C.

Water samples were taken from 20 homes as part of a water conditioning assessment that determines the aesthetic quality of the water, commissioned by the village. The results revealed that the low pH of Pemberton’s water is interacting with the plumbing fittings and fixtures of some houses to produce elevated levels of lead in drinking water.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

High lead concentration in water can cause health problems especially for children and for unborn infants.

The Vancouver Coastal Health and the Ministry of Health advise residents to flush their tap water until it turns cold before consumption. It is also important to not boil the water as boiling may increase the concentration of the existing lead in the supply.

After the lines have been flushed, water should be collected in a suitable container and kept refrigerated to assist with water conservation.

The village will be installing a water conditioning system that will raise the pH of the water as a universal solution to the problem.

Pemberton Mayor Mike Richman assures the public that the municipal water is safe to drink but further testing will be conducted and the public will continue to be updated.
