NDP leader calls for more debates ahead of Saskatchewan election April 4

REGINA – NDP Leader Cam Broten is calling on Premier Brad Wall to agree to more leaders debates during the Saskatchewan election campaign.

Broten says the debates are needed because Wall is – in Broten’s words – “ducking accountability” on a government deal on land for the new Regina highway bypass.

The NDP leader says the premier needs to explain why some businessmen were paid $103,000 an acre for 204 acres of land west of Regina.

He says that’s more than three times the appraised value and far higher than what other landowners got under threat of expropriation.

There is only one debate scheduled so far ahead of the April 4 vote.

Broten is scheduled to speak Wednesday afternoon to the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities in an effort to drum up support in rural areas where the NDP has struggled for votes.
