HRM has plenty to spare in snow clearing budget thanks to mild winter

This winter’s mild temperatures has not only been easy on Haligonians, but it’s also given the City of Halifax a break when it comes to snow clearing costs.

In an update from the city, spokesperson Jennifer Stairs said that by the end of February, winter operations had only gone through $17.9 million of the $26.7 million allotted for 2015-2016.

That total includes $2.9 million spent in the spring of last year to finish snow removal and do repairs.

The city now has about $8.8 million remaining for the rest of the winter, which as forecasters have predicted, is going to continue to be unseasonably warm.

By March 11 of last year, the city had blown through its snow clearing budget because of back-to-back snow storms, as well as compacted ice that covered many Halifax streets.
