WINNIPEG – Manitoba is joining the list of provinces that have a highway of heroes honouring soldiers.
Manitoba’s Highway of Heroes runs along the Trans Canada Highway from just west of Winnipeg to CFB Shilo.
A special dedication ceremony was held near St. Francis-Xavier this morning.

Jim Seggie who lost his son Corporal Mike Seggie in a fatal ambush in Afganistan in 2008. He was there and expressed his appreciation on CJOB radio:
“To be remembered with a stretch of highway, for your sacrifice, not just the fallen but all people who have gone for us, it’s a wonderful thing and we really do appreciate it.”
In 2007, the Ontario government renamed a stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto the highway of heroes.
It has been lined with crowds whenever a military member killed in Afghanistan is transported home via CFB Trenton.
Saskatchewan and British Columbia have similarly named sections of highways.
