Victim of alleged drunk driver identified

WINNIPEG – Drunk driving has been blamed for a crash that killed a man on the TransCanada highway just outside Winnipeg Friday morning.

Friends and family identified the man killed as 22-year-old Rob Joubert of Richer, MB.

It happened at 5:00 am east of Winnipeg Friday on Hwy 1, about one mile east of Highway 206. Police say a Chevy Blazer SUV was rear-ended by Ford Explorer SUV. Joubert was killed in the crash.

The driver of the Explorer suffered “non life threatening injuries” according to RCMP. The 26 year old man is facing charges of Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death. He’s due in court in Winnipeg in August.

Police didn’t release the name of the man charged. Global News has learned he is also from Richer, a town southeast of Winnipeg.

The west bound lanes of the Trans Canada were closed for several hours Friday morning while officers investigated the crash.
