New lockboxes aim to keep realtors safe

The father of a young Calgary realtor who was murdered during an open house is throwing his support behind a new lockbox system.

Nearly five years ago, 21-year-old Lindsay Buziak was murdered while showing a home in B.C. She was alone at the time.

“I’m here today to beg you to be safe as a realtor at all times,” Buziak said at a news conference in Calgary on Thursday. “Leave nothing to chance.”

Lindsay Buziak’s murder is still unsolved.

Under the new system, a single lockbox will be placed at the front of condominium properties, providing access to the main area. A second one will then be placed on the unit itself. It comes in light of attacks on realtors accessing lockboxes in public areas, including one incident in Calgary last fall.

Realtors in Victoria have been using the system for the last five years, with much success. The Calgary Real Estate Board will provide the lockboxes for free to try and protect realtors.
