WINNIPEG — A local design firm is asking Winnipeggers to donate their old hockey sticks, even if they are broken.
Wood Anchor is hoping to build a Manitoba-themed sculpture at the Forks made out of 30 to 40 used wooden sticks.
“We are looking for unique sticks too, ones signed by sports teams or antiques” Jason Neufeld, owner of Wood Anchor said. “Once we have them we will incorporate them into the sculpture.”
Neufeld said he was approached to build the sculpture, as part of The Forks Market’s $2.5 million revitalization project.

“They asked us to come up with a design, and we wanted to do spheres that resembled snowflakes and dandelions, a standard Manitoba association.” he said. “The centre spheres will be made out of solid Manitoba oak too.”
For every hockey stick donated, Wood Anchor will give $5 to Manitoba KidSport.
Wood Anchor is starting to build the sculpture in the coming weeks. Once it’s complete, Neufeld said he hopes the project will bring people out to The Forks to take in the unique design.
