MONTREAL – Quebec provincial police say their anti-terrorism squad is investigating nearly two dozen suspicious packages sent to high-profile Quebec political and media targets.
Police say they’re not sure who was behind the packages sent yesterday, including one that was sent to the riding office of Premier Jean Charest.
The packages contained white powder and some had letters, but provincial police say it wasn’t a dangerous substance and won’t reveal the contents of the notes.
At least one of the packages contained baking soda, but police say the substances are being examined by health officials to determine exactly what they are.
Police are also investigating the source of packages, a group calling themselves the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Quebec.
Police say that name stems from an organization that existed nearly 40 years ago in Quebec and had ties to the Front de liberation du Quebec, a nationalist paramilitary group commonly known as the FLQ.
But a spokesman says the group hasn’t been active in recent years.
