1 kayaker dead, another missing after 2 empty kayaks found in Ontario river

A female kayaker is dead while a police search team is trying to find a male kayaker after the pair apparently got stuck in the ice in a Caledon, Ont., river.

Ontario Provincial Police say they received a report around 2:50 p.m. Sunday that two empty kayaks were found stuck in the ice of the middle of the Credit River, northwest of Toronto.

They say the body of the female kayaker was found some time later and that she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An OPP helicopter along with the emergency response and K-9 teams are searching for the second kayaker.

OPP spokeswoman Const. Brenda Evans declined to say whether the male kayaker was presumed dead.

Police say an underwater search and rescue team will arrive Monday morning to scour the river.
