OTTAWA – Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane apologized Tuesday for missing a team practice a day earlier, adding he takes “full accountability” for his actions.
Kane attended the NBA all-star game in Toronto on Sunday night and missed Monday’s practice after sleeping in. The team suspended him from Tuesday night’s game in Ottawa for breaking a team rule.
“I want to apologize to my teammates, the (team owner) Pegula family as well, and obviously our coaching staff and general manager,” Kane said. “It’s something that should have never happened and it’s something that I can promise you won’t happen again, and it’s something that I’m definitely going to learn from.”
The 24-year-old Kane has 16 goals and eight assists in 47 games with Buffalo this season. He was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets last year.
Kane added he was “extremely disappointed” that he let his teammates down. He’s hopeful that he’ll be back in the lineup for Friday’s road game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
“I know Evander addressed his teammates yesterday when we got in to Ottawa,” said head coach Dan Bylsma. “Evander broke a team rule and he’s suffering the consequences of that and that’s the way we’re going to deal with it.”
