Bay employee stabbed multiple times trying to stop shoplifter in Surrey

A man is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed trying to stop an alleged shoplifter in Surrey. Shane MacKichan

A 29-year-old man who is an employee of The Bay at Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, was stabbed multiple times trying to stop an alleged shoplifter on Tuesday night.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the mall at 10355 152 Street.

Police say the initial investigation has revealed that the victim was trying to stop the alleged shoplifter when he was stabbed. Another employee tells Global News that the victim was assisting The Bay’s in-house security when he was stabbed.

RCMP say the victim was able to control the suspect until mall security arrived to help.

When officers arrived on scene they found the employee with stab wounds to his arms and upper body. He was taken to hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released.

RCMP arrested the 34-year-old male suspect involved in this incident and charges are pending.
