Bargain hunters could be making the border line ups a little longer than usual today now that duty free limits have increased.
The changes apply to visits to the U.S. that are longer than 24 hours.
Limits are doubling or even quadrupling depending on how long you’re south of the border.
If you have been out of Canada for more than 24 hours, you will now be able to bring back $200 of tax-exempt goods. That’s an increase from $50.

If you are out of the country for 48 hours or more, you will now be able to bring back $800, up from $400.
Limits for alcohol and tobacco remain the same.
Canadian businesses in border towns say they are worried about a significant financial impact.
They are calling for the federal government to get rid of some Canadian import duties and tariffs.
They say that will let them pass savings on to Canadian consumers.
“Tariffs are almost as high as 18 per cent on sports equipment, sports goods, linens and cotton. These are significantly impacting the Canadian retailers’ ability to pass on savings,” says Shafiq Jamal of the Retail Council of Canada.
