Family Day at the family business: 2 sets of sisters run Edmonton company

WATCH ABOVE: For many, Family Day is a chance to get away from work and spend time with your loved ones. That isn't quite how it works at one Edmonton business where every day is Family Day. Fletcher Kent reports – Feb 15, 2016

EDMONTON – Growing up, Caroline Gault worshiped her older sister, Monica, and described wanting to do everything her sister did.

Now, the Gault sisters spend almost every day together–and they couldn’t be happier.

“We had rooms right beside each other and we just imagined one day we’re going to work together,” Monica Gault said. “And now we have desks right beside each other.”

The Gaults work at Poppy Barley, an Edmonton shoe company.

Co-founders Justine and Kendall Barber are also sisters–but they say working with that family dynamic isn’t always easy.

“I do think having two sets of sisters in the office does have its dynamic. We have our sister voices,” Kendall said.

Justine added the upsides of a family business far outweigh any challenges. In the three-and-a-half years since they opened, they’ve learned how to work with family members.

“You’re so used to fighting and making up,” Justine Barber said. “There’s this resilience in our relationship that I think is good for having conflict and then getting over it.”
