VPD chief Jim Chu supports investigation into Paul Boyd’s death

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu said it was a sad day for everyone on the force when Paul Boyd was killed at the hands of a police officer.

“I promised the family that we would work hard to bring together all available resources in the justice system to find out exactly what happened to their son and why,” said Chu.

“I sympathized with the Boyd family then for their loss and have always felt that way since. I am very sorry that events unfolded the way they did that day.”

A new video was released earlier this week showing the final moments of Boyd’s life, and Chu said in his opinion the video is important enough to prompt another look at what happened.

An investigation has now been launched.

“We take this issue and the public’s concern so seriously that we are going to depart from our standard policy of not making public statements while a review or investigation is underway,” said Chu.

“We’re taking this position because we believe the public has a right to have access to the most accurate, thorough and up-to-date information on this matter as possible.”

Chu announced a new webpage with media releases and reports relating to the Boyd case – called The Events in the Death of Paul Boyd.

Boyd was shot on Granville Street on August 13, 2007.

The 39-year-old had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
