Transportation Safety Board investigating after Newfoundland ferry hits wharf

GATINEAU, Que. – The Transportation Safety Board is investigating after a Newfoundland ferry hit a wharf west of St. John’s.

The federal agency says it is sending a team of investigators to find out more about what caused the MV Beaumont Hamel ferry to hit a dock Wednesday morning in the town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

Provincial officials say it lost reverse propulsion and is now out of service indefinitely.

About 75 people were onboard at the time, including a group of high school students from Bell Island and Ontario who were on a joint field trip.

No serious injuries were reported.

Transport Canada and provincial officials are also investigating.
