A 57-year-old North Carolina man died Saturday after suffering chest pains while participating in the Krispy Kreme Challenge.
The unidentified competitor was forced to step out of the race about 1 mile in after experiencing discomfort according to a statement from event organizers. He was taken to hospital “where he was pronounced dead.”
The charitable race is organized by students from North Carolina State University which sees competitors run 2.5 miles to a Krispy Kreme Store, consume a dozen doughnuts and run another 2.5 miles to the finish line.
It is billed on www.krispykremechallenge.com as “the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude.”
The run first began in 2004 and had more than 8,000 participants in 2015. All proceeds from the event go to the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
