They’re used to putting in batteries to run their toys and TV remotes – but now some Calgary elementary students are giving new life to old batteries.
Grade 3 students at the Foundations for the Future School in the Southwood neighbourhood are working on a major battery recycling project.
“They go into the dump, and the landfills get bigger and bigger,” student Ryan Lu said.
“The batteries can create chemicals,” student Imaan Mohammed said. “It’s really bad for the environment.”
The school’s been collecting batteries for the past two months, and is now ready to ship 19,000 of them to a recycling facility in Ontario.
The metal will then be reused to make things like tools, kitchen utensils and golf clubs.
“So I think we should stop putting things into the garbage,” Mohammed said, “because recycling can really help the world a lot.”
If you’ve got some batteries you’d like to recycle, you can drop them off at the Foundations for the Future School in Southwood.
You can also take them to dozens of stores around Calgary, including London Drugs, Staples and Home Depot.
