Winnipeg celebrates 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote

WINNIPEG — Thursday marks the 100th year anniversary of women’s right to vote in Manitoba.

The prairie province became the first in Canada to pass legislation that allowed women to vote and hold elected office on January 28, 1916.

To celebrate the milestone, museums, schools and cultural organizations around the city are hosting events that honour the women’s suffrage movement.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

The CMHR is hosting tour exhibits that will educate students about women’s right to vote, as well as hosting speeches held by prominent women, such as former prime minister Kim Campbell. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Manitoba Museum

The Manitoba Museum has created an exhibition called Nice Women Don’t Want to Vote, to honour the 100th anniversary. It displays the causes, contradictions and people in the suffrage movement. The exhibit opens to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday.

RBC Convention Centre

The Nellie McClung Foundation is hosting a gala Thursday evening at the RBC Convention Centre. The event will host the Nellie Awards, which recognizes Manitoba women who have made significant contributions to social justice and human rights.

Manitoba cultural organizations

The Pakistan Canada Cultural Equation of Manitoba and Welcome Place are celebrating the 100 year milestone with a lunch hour presentation. It will be made to honour the passion, inspiration and fierce determination of women during the women’s suffrage movement. It takes place at the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council on 521 Bannatyne Avenue at 12:15 p.m.

Burton Cummings Theatre 

Students will be gathering at the Burton Cummings Theatre for an “epic school-wide” democracy event on Thursday morning. Speakers, such as Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon, will be talking about the importance of participation within a democracy.

The venue is an important location for the anniversary, as it was used during the women’s suffrage movement for debates and a mock parliament that Nellie McClung took part in.
