MONTREAL – Commissioners with the Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) voted 9-3 Monday evening to reconsider its decision to close Lakeside Academy and Riverview Elementary.

The schools will remain open until at least Dec. 2016.

LBPSB chairperson Suanne Stein Day voted against keeping the schools open.

Parents have been lobbying the school board to reverse the decision since the announcement in early Dec. 2015.

The board had also revealed plans to merge four elementary schools.

The only way the LBPSB can fully reverse its decision is if it learns new information that was not known prior to the vote to close the schools on Dec. 14.

The board said it is under pressure to reduce the number of schools operating at less than 50 per cent capacity.
