EDMONTON – Police are investigating after the body of a man in his mid 20s was found in the Mill Creek ravine near the Hazeldean neighbourhood in south Edmonton.
The body was discovered by a couple walking their dogs in the area early Saturday morning.
This past week, police and friends and family of Alex Thomas-Haug have been searching the Mill Creek Ravine for the 24 year-old, who was last seen by his friends around 4 a.m., Monday, May 14 close to his home in the area of 95 Street and 73 Avenue. He then allegedly called a friend to arrange to pick up his house keys and started out on foot, possibly through the Mill Creek Ravine, to the friend’s home on the other side of the ravine. Thomas-Haug never made it there, though.

While police have yet to confirm that the body discovered in the ravine is his, friends and family on the ‘Find Alex Thomas Haug’ Facebook page posted on Saturday afternoon that ‘Alex has been found,’ and that his death has been deemed non-criminal.
His mother, Lorna Thomas, had the following message to the public:
“We love our son very very much and we’re encouraging all the public to listen to this message very carefully: If you’re feeling depressed or suicidal, please get help,” she said. “Please be aware of the possibility of stress caused by the pressure of work, because it can increase depression and the risk of suicide.”
She also said young men in Alex’s age range of 17-24 are in the highest risk group, and cited Edmonton’s distress line (780-482-HELP) as a possible source of help.

Thomas added that she’s happy for the support her son had throughout his life, and is grateful for all those who came out to search for him.
“Obviously you’re not happy for an outcome like this but there’s closure, which is very important..not just for our family but (to) all the people who came out to help.”
