A Tom Thomson painting, which was bought at an East Vancouver garage sale for less than $50, sold at auction for $110,000 on Wednesday.
It was projected to sell for about half a million dollars.
The unidentified buyer had two paintings that he took to Maynards in Vancouver for an appraisal, after purchasing them at the garage sale.

The one by Thomson was a previously unknown work.
A two-month long authentication process discovered that the painting that sold on Wednesday was likely painted in 1915.
Thomson is best known for inspiring the ‘Group of Seven’ artists.
The second painting that the man brought in was a watercolour by Frederick Horsman Varley, and is worth approximently $4,000 – $6,000.
