Flames from vehicle spread to balcony of Saskatoon apartment

SASKATOON – Members of the Saskatoon Fire Department extinguished a vehicle fire that spread to the balcony of a nearby apartment building Monday. At around 12:20 p.m. CT, firefighters were called to 3701 8th Street East.

Officials say the fire was primarily coming from the engine compartment of the parked car and had extended to the balcony directly above it.

As crews attacked the blaze with water, the incident commander called for a second fire engine to assist with evacuating the building. The fire was brought under control within two minutes and did not extend to the interior of the building.

Damage is estimated at $10,000 and no injuries were reported.

Officials say the cause of the blaze cannot be determined but it appears to have started with the block heater.
