New wedding app makes it easy for single guests to mingle

TORONTO – Meet people, match common interests, share stories and flirt. It may sound like a dating site, but it’s actually a new web app used for wedding planning.

Weduary was founded by social software design leader Brit Morin, and sets itself apart from other wedding website creators by allowing guests to meet and get to know each other online before the event.

“After all, aren’t your guests one of the most important parts of your day?” asks the homepage.

To use the site, the happy couple just logs in with each of their respective Facebook accounts, and follows steps to create and customize their wedding site.

The colour scheme can be adjusted, registry options can be tailored to your taste, photos uploaded or imported from your Facebook, and, of course, guest invitations sent without licking all those envelopes.

One caveat is since invites can only happen through Facebook for now, if Grandma doesn’t have a profile, you’ll have to send hers the old-fashioned way.

Social media savvy guests will receive a private invitation on Facebook or through email and then they need to log in with their Facebook account.

All wedding event details will be available to them: date, time, contact and hotel information via Google Maps integration.

Invitees also have opportunities to tell stories about the happy couple on the site.

And, as promised, they can look through the other guests and find people with mutual friends and/or common interests. Weduary’s main page emphasizes that singles can “flirt” and check out other eligible bachelors and bachelorettes before the big day.

With all the information and a complete wedding network at hand, guests can go in on gifts together, potentially take advantage of group travel deals or even plan to share accommodation costs.

Considering how much socializing is now done online, it’s no wonder Morin thinks Weduary will work.
