Surrey RCMP are issuing a warning after a number of recent car accidents involving pedestrians in the city.

Police say whether you are driving or walking, you should be aware of your surroundings and pay attention.

At least four people have been struck while walking in Surrey in the past week alone.

On Jan. 9, Surrey RCMP responded to a pedestrian motor vehicle collision in the area of 72nd Avenue and 121st Street. A 77-year-old woman was crossing the intersection at this location with no crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle. The woman was transported to hospital in serious condition with multiple injuries. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Surrey, remained at the scene. Police say speed and impairment don’t appear to be factors.

Police also responded to two additional incidents earlier in the week where pedestrians suffered minor injuries after being struck by separate vehicles on Wednesday, Jan.6.

The incidents took place in Newton and Cloverdale.

Surrey RCMP will be stepping up enforcement in some of the high pedestrian locations over the next few days to help spread the message.

Last year, more than half of fatal car accidents in the city involved pedestrians.
