TORONTO – In case you forgot, it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday. Daughters, sons and husbands alike are most likely brainstorming ideas to shower moms with lavish gifts and pampering on their special day.

But Mother’s day is no longer devoted to showing mom how much she means to us with hugs and kisses. According to Hallmark Canada it’s the third largest card sending occasion and it’s arguably the busiest business day of the year for florists.

To help mark this Mother’s Day, Global News.ca looked at some of the numbers and statistics behind a day that celebrates everything mom.

9.2 million – The number of mothers in Canada in 2006.

1914 – The year in which Mother’s Day became an official holiday.

$152.52 – The U.S. dollar amount that American consumers are expected to spend on gifts for Mother’s Day, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation. This is an eight per cent increase in spending from last year.

1000 – The number of Mother’s Day cards that Hallmark offers.

209 – The average amount of minutes women spent with their families, per day, in 2005.

59 – The per cent of men who help with house hold chores such as vacuuming, doing dishes and preparing food throughout the entire year, not just on Mother’s Day.

29 – The average age a woman had her first child in Canada, according to a 2008 statistic.

122.5 – The amount of calls made to moms in the U.S. on Mother’s Day, according to a survey conducted by AT&T.

18 – The per cent of consumers who wait until the last minute to find mom a gift.
