LETHBRIDGE – Fire crews were quick to respond, but by the time they arrived, a home on the south side was already engulfed in flames.
Crews were called to the home on the corner of 10 Avenue and 15 Street South at around 4:00 a.m. Thursday.
A total of 17 firefighters from three fire stations responded.
Crews did manage to speak with the home owners and confirmed the home was under renovations and the occupants were staying at a different location at the time of the fire.

“We know that the occupants of the house are safe,” Fire Prevention Officer Mark Royer said. “They were doing some renovations to the kitchen area, and so they were sleeping somewhere else at night.”
Because the entire house was involved, fire crews were not able to make their way into the home due to safety concerns.
The freezing temperatures made the fire-fighting efforts difficult for both personnel and equipment.
“The firefighters, they get very cold, we are all human, so it takes more man power to fight a fire like this. But they did an excellent job in saving the exposing houses – the house just to the south of this house- I don’t even think the snow has melted off of it… That’s how good of a job they did protecting that house.”
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
