HALIFAX – Temperatures in Halifax have been fairly frosty of late, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to go skating on a frozen lake or pond just yet.
Tony Rodgers, a spokesperson for the Halifax Regional search and rescue team, says although ice is forming on small ponds and in the coves of bigger lakes, things are still not safely frozen over.
Despite the warnings, the chilly temps are bringing folks out to carve the ice on lakes around the city.
The municipality employs a team to check the thickness of ice on local lakes and Rodgers says people wanting to know if it’s safe to venture out can check online or call the lake ice information line at 902-490-3577.

The recommended thickness of ice for safe skating is 15 centimetres for individuals and 20 centimetres for groups, according to the Red Cross.
People who can’t wait for the lakes to freeze can also visit the Emera Skating Oval in Halifax, which is open until mid-March.
