A dash cam video, posted to YouTube on Jan. 5, shows a SUV involved in a serious crash on the Island Highway.
Brian Hartt had turned on his dash cam and was approaching the Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni exit at 2:58 p.m. on Tuesday.
The SUV passes him on the left and just a short distance later, appears to lose control and careen off the road, sliding down the snowy embankment. It then spins around, taking out a hydro pole, which knocks down a light standard in the process.
A small explosion comes from the transformer when it hits the ground.
Hartt said he stayed at the scene until the fire department and ambulance arrived. He said he didn’t think the male driver was speeding, but the road conditions were a little slushy at the time. The driver, who was the only occupant, seemed to be OK after the crash and was talking to Hartt about what happened.
Since Hartt posted his video on Tuesday, it has been viewed more than 17,000 times.
