EDMONTON – Say hello to Edmonton’s first baby of 2016.

The yet to be named baby girl was born at 12:05 a.m. at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital to parents Amanveer and Gurpawandeep Brar.

The couple, who have been married for two years, is from Edmonton and this is their first child.

Amanveer said she was originally due Christmas Day.

“I was happy to give birth on Christmas because it’s Christmas right?” said Amanveer. “But I’m more happy right now. It was a big surprise.”

Amanveer said she arrived at the hospital at 8 a.m. on Thursday, thinking her child would be the last baby born in 2015.

“But [the] baby decided to come in the new year,” said Gurpawandeep with a laugh.

Both the mother and father are glowing as they get to know their young daughter.

They also said it is quite the honour for their baby to be Edmonton’s first of the year.

“It’s a really good feeling right now. It’s a good memory for [the] whole year, for [our whole lives].”

The baby weighs seven pounds and four ounces.

The family of three is planning to leave the hospital Saturday.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital welcomed the capital region’s second baby of the year born at 1:23 a.m.
