New Year’s Eve rescue for dog stranded on the Bow River

CALGARY – The Calgary Fire Department was called out to rescue a small dog off the ice near the Calgary Zoo Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses said they tried to coax the dog to shore but it was too scared.

Carol Patterson said it looked like the dog had been in the water for a while before it was rescued.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The poor little thing was just huddled on the edge of the ice,” said Patterson. “He looked frozen. I wasn’t sure if he was all on the ice or part of him was still in the water and he was just clinging to the ice at a very bad spot by just the little bit of his fur there.”

The fire department also had a boat on the water just next to where the dog was in case it fell in.

Fire officials said the dog wasn’t injured and has been turned over to animal bylaw services.
