Nova Scotia’s ‘Jesus’ T-shirt controversy gets animated

HALIFAX – The story of devout Chrisitan high school student William Swinimer and his “Life is wasted without Jesus” T-Shirt has made its way around the world from tiny Chester Basin, Nova Scotia.

Taiwan-based Next Media Animation produced a 35 second animated clip about the Grade 12 student and his suspension last week for refusing to remove the controversial shirt.

The CGI-animated clip shows Swinimer high-fiving Jesus and depicts the teachers at his school, Forest Heights Community School, demonzing the 19-year-old for his beliefs and persistence in wearing the tee.

The subtitles for the Mandarin-language video also say “His school claimed the shirt attacked those who don’t Christian beliefs.”

Cut to a gleeful (animated) Swinimer firing crosses from his bright yellow T-shirt into the backs and chests of his fellow schoolmates.

The South Shore Regional School Board has always attested the young man was not suspended because of the message on his shirt, but his family and his pastor say he was being targeted because of his faith.

Swinimer was to return to forest Heights Community School Monday and planned to wear the now famous shirt, but his father pulled him out school.Read the full story and watch raw video here.

The clip also rehashes other stories, from the United States, when teens have been disciplined for wearing clothing with political overtones: gay Ohio high school student Maverick Couch, who wore a shirt reading “Jesus is not a homophobe” and Texanna Edwards, who was forbidden to wear a Confederate flag dress to her prom.

The video was posted online May 6 and has been watched almost 2,500 times to date.
