MONTREAL – Dozens of Verdun residents spent Christmas on the street after a fire ripped through a six-unit housing complex Friday evening.
At least 110 firefighters worked through the evening to battle the blaze that broke out at 191 1st Avenue, between Wellington Street and Lasalle Boulevard.
Some 30 fire trucks were called to the scene of the four-alarm fire, shortly after 7:35 p.m.
According to Marwam Shedeed, spokesperson for the Montreal Fire Department, the blaze appeared to have started in a small locker on a third floor balcony.
No one was injured in the fire, but four adjoining buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure and 50 people were re-located with the help of the Red Cross.
Damages to the three-story apartment complex and adjoining buildings is evaluated at more than $500,000.
The cause of the blaze is still unknown but police have ruled out arson.
