Highway 33 driver learns hard lesson about winter driving

NEAR KELOWNA – An overnight snowfall, worn tires and excessive speed for the road conditions combined to cause a single-vehicle rollover crash Friday morning on Highway 33.

It happened at about 8:30 between Kelowna and Joe Rich.

The “novice” driver lost control on a curve. His car fish-tailed, left the pavement and rolled two or three times before hitting a tree.

Police say slippery road conditions were a factor.

“Preliminary findings are the vehicle was probably going too fast for those conditions. The speed here is 100 kmh but you should go slower given the conditions,” says Kelowna RCMP Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The driver and his passenger, both teenagers, were banged up but mostly unhurt.

“The outcome could have been much worse for sure,” says O’Donaghey. “To be able to walk away from the crash with minor injuries, I think they’re very lucky.”
