15 hours of Star Wars for die-hard fans

MONTREAL-  A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Actually it was 4:45 a.m Thursday at the Scotiabank Theatre.

Star Wars fans came dressed the part for an all-day marathon.

“I’m Darth Malgus, from the Old Republic” said one fan, dressed head-to-toe –including a mask. “This took nine months, all from scratch.”

Popcorn was the breakfast of Jedis in the early morning.

Star Wars aficionados are getting the full experience.

They’re watching every single Star Wars movie in order from Episode I all the way until the new release, Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

That’s over 15 hours of movie watching.

Fans awoke early and some even took the day off work to be there.

“I’ve always been a fan of the movies and watched them hundreds of times,” said one man. “We couldn’t miss it. I took the day off work and I’m here.”

Global Montreal’s movie columnist Eric Cohen, says that this franchise’s cult status has reached new levels.

“I haven’t seen this kind of reaction, anticipation in a really long time, as far as I can remember,” he said.

He got to see an advance release of the film and says it should exceed expectations.

One of the big draws; bringing back beloved characters.

That’s enough to win over even the toughest critics.

“I saw it with other people in the press. Usually those screenings are very quiet,” said Cohen. “When Han Solo and Chewbacca came on the screen there was hooting and hollering from jaded journalists.”

It’s been 10 long years since the last release.

And that fandom doesn’t die no matter what age you are.

“I’ve loved this movie franchise and most of the toys and merchandise that goes with it. I’m a 40 year old who owns a lightsaber,” said one man.
