Shovels in the ground for Oliver Motorsports complex

OLIVER–At a time when most expensive sports cars are safely off the road, construction is beginning on an elite motorsports country club in the South Okanagan.

A groundbreaking celebration was held on Wednesday for Area 27.

“It’s like a country club,” says one of the founding members of Area 27.  “For years golfers have had a place to call home, but motorsports enthusiasts haven’t.”

Work begins in earnest now, on a 4.83 kilometre race track designed by Canadian racing legend, Jacques Villeneuve.

The club, which is being built on Osoyoos Indian Band land, is meant to attract people with a passion for hot cars, and for driving them fast.

The price for that privilege is a one-time $35,000 membership fee and three grand a year.

“It’s a unique and special project,” says Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band, “it’s not just good for the Osoyoos Indian Band, but the entire Okanagan.”  Louie adds, “When you have multi-millionaires hanging around, that’s a pretty good sign.

Area 27 already has 120 members.  The goal is to have 200 members by the time the track opens, sometime in the summer of 2016.
