Delta mosque holds event supporting #JeSuisHijabi movement

A mosque in Delta opened its doors to the public today in hopes of raising awareness of the Muslim faith in Metro Vancouver.

The interfaith gathering at Delta’s Baitur Rahman Mosque happens annually, but this year’s focus was the acts of violence against Muslims around the world.

“Right now, I guess the Muslim world is more focused on the terrorism. Every time you see a person a hijab or a beard, it kinds of triggers of fear in people,” said Shafquat Malik.

Malik is with Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada, which has launched a national campaign, #JeSuisHijabi to help people better understand the religion – and in particular Muslim woman.

“We want people to know when you see a hijabi woman, what it really means. Is she really suppressed? Is she not living her life? [No], it’s a choice, it’s something that makes them more powerful,” she says.

The gathering in Delta included Muslim speakers, as well as those representing Christianity , Hinduism, Sikhism, and Judaism – with the goal of promoting multiculturalism and tolerance.
