Carels scores twice as Hawks win Esso Cup gold

CHARLOTTETOWN – Cassidy Carels scored twice and set up one more as the Pembina Valley Hawks defeated the Thunder Bay Queens 4-2 on Saturday to win gold at the 2012 Esso Cup.

Lauryn Keen had a goal and two assists for the Hawks while Jessica Kaminsky scored the other.

Madison Hutchinson picked up two assists for Pembina Valley to give her a team-leading eight points in six games.

Kaitlyn Tougas had a goal and an assist for the Queens, who were champions in 2010. Michela Cava scored once and Bronwyn Bolduc assisted on both of her club’s goals.

Brittini Mowat earned Pembina Valley player of the game honours after making 35 saves for the victory while Megan Leikkari stopped 15 shots in a losing effort.

Pembina Valley went 2 for 5 on the power play as Thunder Bay failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

In the bronze medal game, Brett Campbell scored twice in the third period as the Edmonton Thunder beat the Halifax Metro Boston Pizza 4-1.

It’s the second year in a row that Edmonton has won bronze and third straight with a medal.

Jessica Sekulic and Rachel Johnson also scored for the Thunder while Cambell picked up an assist for a three-point performance that earned her Edmonton’s player of the game.

Amanda Volcko scored the lone goal for Halifax.

Kianna Peterson made 14 saves for the win as Rebecca Weagle turned away 21 shots in defeat.

Edmonton went 1 for 5 on the power play while Halifax failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.
