Sluggish start to winter stagnates ski season

MONTREAL – For avid skiers, conditions around Montreal this year have been less than ideal.

Patches of snow are giving way to grass and dirt at Mont Saint-Bruno – but it’s not all bad news.

Ski hills in the Montreal area received an early Christmas gift, as an unexpected event brought in crowds.

“[It] was a good day for us because of the school strikes,” said Sebastien Bertrand, with Mont Saint-Bruno.

“It actually helped because people came to ski.”

The hills were covered in loose granular snow and flanked by bare trees; the view from the top wasn’t much better.

In fact, Saint-Bruno has the only patch of snow for miles around.

It was quiet on Thursday morning with one solitary skier having all four runs to himself.

Even thought it’s been a slow start to the season, there’s still hope that the next few weeks will bring a white Christmas.

“The holidays are a very important period,” said Bertrand.

“Even if the start of the season is a bit slower, if the holidays are good then it’s great and we’ll catch up. We’re hoping it’ll get colder so we can start making snow.”

But with no snow and record highs expected in the forecast, things aren’t looking so sunny for local ski hills.
