Heavily armed officers had flooded the neighbourhood because of initial reports it was a home invasion. That was later determined to be false.

Police had initially charged a teen boy who was known to Leary with second-degree murder. On Wednesday, the youth was arrested and returned to custody and is facing first-degree murder charges.

Leary was a mother of four daughters and a grandmother. Several family members still lived with her. In February, Leary retired from a lengthy career with the Norway House Cree Nation.
