WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Bisons swim team has made a big splash, landing multiple national champion Kelsey Wog as a recruit.

The Winnipeg breaststroke specialist took home two gold medals from the 2015 Canadian swimming championships and four titles at the 2014 Canadian Age Group National Championship.

The grade 12 Vincent Massey student was named Team Manitoba’s closing ceremonies flag bearer at the 2015 Western Canada Summer games after winning a total of ten medals. Wog also finished eighth in the women’s 200m individual medley at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

“She’s a relaxed trainer and likes to have fun,” said Bisons swimming coach Vlastimil Cerny. “It will also be a challenge for me because she’s probably going to be the most gifted and talented and successful swimmer to come out of Manitoba. It is a challenge to take someone like that and continue to work with them over several years going forward.”

Wog says she didn’t look anywhere else when exploring schools and chose to sign a letter of intent with the University of Manitoba to stay close to her parents.

“I get really homesick so it’s pretty important they’re close by,” said Wog. “They’re everything. My mom always has food ready for me. She packs my lunch everyday. She’s just always there whenever I need support and help.”

Wog plans to major in agriculture at the university. She was one of 13 swimmers that joined the Bisons Junior swim program in its inaugural season in 2006-2007.

“That was the strategy when we first started,” said Cerny. “It’s a testament to the program and coaches involved. She’s had a number of different coaches coaching her throughout the years.”
