North Shore Rescue raising funds for team member with cancer

North Shore Rescue is normally the team that jumps into action when someone needs help. But tonight it’s asking the public for help.

Jay Piggot is an ambulance attendant and full time volunteer with North Shore Rescue. He works on the elite helicopter rescue team as a medic.

But a few days ago, the 34-year-old husband and father of two young boys was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of cancer.

Doctors will try to remove the tumour after he undergoes chemo to try to shrink the size of it – but that means Piggot can’t work.

As he receives no benefits, North Shore Rescue is trying to raise money to cover his wages while he fights to get better.

“We’re asking the community to rally around Jay and his family, and contribute to the trust fund that will allow Jay and his family to focus on his fight with cancer, and alleviate the financial burden on their family,” says North Shore Rescue Team Leader Mike Danks.

Piggot says he’s overwhelmed by the support he’s gotten from his fellow volunteers.

“They came to our house yesterday, put up our Christmas lights…raked our leaves, trimmed our hedges. The support has been unbelievable, and the strength they’re giving me to focus on fighting this has been second to none.”

To help, you can to a website set up for Piggot, Rescue the Rescuer. You can donate to his cause at any Blueshore Financial branch:
