Thunder Bay Queens continue to roll at Esso Cup with 8-1 win

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Thunder Bay Queens continue to roll at the Esso Cup.

Michela Cava, Jessica Gazzola and Jillian Langtry each had two goals and an assist Tuesday as the Ontario representatives at the national women’s midget hockey tournament hammered the Rebelles de Saguenay-Lac St-Jean 8-1.

Natasha Nicholl and Samantha Strassburger also scored for Thunder Bay, while Brianna Iazzolino had three assists as the Queens improved to 3-0. Jayde Turcotte made 15 saves for the win.

Sophie Gagnon scored the lone goal for the winless Rebelles, while Annie-Pier Harvey stopped 42 shots for the Quebec representatives.

In other action, the Pembina Valley Hawks beat Halifax Metro Boston Pizza 2-1 and the Edmonton Thunder shut out the host Capital District Cyclones 4-0.

In the early game, Thunder Bay led 2-0 after the first before exploding for five goals in the second.

Langtry scored her second of the game, a short-handed goal midway through the second, to kick-start an offensive outburst for the Queens, which also featured two goals from Cava and singles from both Gazzola and Strassburger.

Brooke Drummond had a goal and an assist for Pembina, the West representatives. Kari Braun had the other goal for the Valley Hawks, while Breanna Lanceleve replied for Halifax, which is representing the Atlantic region.

In the late game, Amy Boucher and Alanna Tinney scored power-play goals as the Thunder sent the host Cyclones to their third straight loss.

Jessica Sekulic and Brett Campbell also scored for the Pacific representative Thunder, who won their first game of the tournament to go with a regulation loss and an overtime defeat.

Edmonton goaltenders Kianna Peterson and Chloe Sanderson combined for 12 saves for the shutout.

Emma MacKinnon stopped 28 shots for the Cyclones.
