A new video posted by the Wadena Volunteer Fire Department shows a “near miss” after an explosion at a train derailment. The CNR freight train carrying 80,000 gallons of petroleum-based product derailed near Clair, Sask. on Oct. 7, 2014.
The train was heading to Winnipeg from Saskatoon when 26 cars went off the tracks, six of which were carrying dangerous goods.

In the posting, officials with the fire department said “people ignored the warning to stay outside the safety zone to get pictures” or to take a closer look of the derailment.
The derailment forced the evacuation of approximately 50 people from Clair and farms in the area.

Fire department officials said during the salvage operations, around 150 gallons of the petroleum-based product leaked from a crack in a tank.
“This shows how dangerous a controlled flare by Hazmat can get,” continued the post.
“The Hazmat crew survived because of the crew we use.”
“They call this a ‘near miss’.”
