Search ended for man believed to be in South Saskatchewan River

SASKATOON – A rescue search on the South Saskatchewan River has ended. Saskatoon police received a call around 12:30 p.m. CT Wednesday from a man who sounded to be in distress on the Broadway Bridge.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were not able to locate the caller but a backpack was found nearby.

The Saskatoon Fire Department was called by police to assist in a river search for the man who may have jumped off the bridge into the river.

The water rescue team put two divers in the water and did a grid pattern search at the perceived point of entry and headed down the river from there. A special sonar tool was used to take images of the river bottom.

The police’s air support unit was also deployed in an effort to locate the individual.

No trace of a person was found. The search was ended at 5 p.m. CT.
