Saskatoon police catch 2 suspects with help of air support unit

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon police air support unit (ASU) helped officers on the ground in the apprehension of two suspects Tuesday. At around 1:40 a.m. CT, patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle in a back alley in the area of 21st Street and Avenue U South.

When approached, the vehicle immediately fled and attempted to evade police.

A short pursuit was terminated as ASU confirmed they were tracking the vehicle via the airplane and could advise them of the vehicle’s direction of travel.

Ground units tried repeatedly to stop the vehicle with stop sticks but were unsuccessful.

ASU was following the suspects for nearly an hour when it witnessed a firearm being thrown from the vehicle at an intersection, according to police. A firearm was located by officers.

The suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle on foot in the Adelaide/Churchill neighbourhood. ASU directed officers to the locations of a 27-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman and took them into custody.

They are facing a total of more than 20 charges including evading police, dangerous driving, drugs and firearms. The accused appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Tuesday afternoon.
