Calgary stays Tory stronghold in 2012 provincial election

Premier Alison Redford has led her party to a majority government in the 2012 provincial election.

It was an interesting race to watch in Calgary, with lots of excitement for voters and political junkies.

Redford successfully reclaimed her seat in Calgary-Elbow, which she won previously in 2008.

The PC’s ended the night with 20 Calgary ridings, compared to the Wildrose’s two and Liberals 3

Liberal Kent Hehr reclaimed his seat in Calgary-Buffalo, which he has held since 2008.

Liberal David Swann maintained his seat in the riding of Calgary-Mountain View.

In Calgary-Currie, a riding previously held by Alberta Party MLA Dave Taylor until he decided not to seek re-election, the winner was PC school Principal Christine Cusanelli.

Another riding of interest was Calgary-Glenmore, which saw PC candidate Linda Johnson defeat former Wildrose Alliance leader Paul Hinman.

In Calgary-Greenway, PC Manmeet Bhullar was successfully re-elected, after running against controversial Wildrose candidate and church minister Ron Leech, who recently suggested in a debate that he would have an advantage in representing the multicultural riding because he’s white.

The PC’s have kept their seat in Calgary-West, after former PC MLA Ron Liepert announced he would not be seeking re-election. There was controversy over the nomination process to replace him as the Tory candidate. Shiraz Sharrif initially won, but the party ordered a second vote after finding evidence of irregularities. Shariff lost the second nomination vote to Ken Hughes, the former chair of Alberta Health Service.

PC Solicitor General Jonathan Denis and PC Yvonne Fritz both won seats in their ridings.

The two Calgary ridings that went to a Wildrose candidate were Calgary-Shaw, formerly held by the PC’s, and Calgary-Fish Creek which Heather Forsyth won by a narrow margin.

Two former Calgary broadcasters also won in the ridings they ran in; PC Sandra Jansen in Calgary-North West, and Wildrose Bruce McAllister in Chestermere-Rocky View.

It’s a 12th consecutive majority government for the Tories, dating back to 1971.
