WINNIPEG – If you get a gift card, you will now have longer to use it without it losing value.
Starting Tuesday inactivity fees will no longer be allowed on mall gift cards purchased in Manitoba.
Mall gift cards could previously be subject to inactivity fees if they weren’t used for 12 consecutive months.
A business could face a fine of between $1,000 and $5,000 if it doesn’t comply. The fines jump to between $5,000 to $20,000 for a corporation.
Expiry dates on other gift cards were previously banned in the province, except if the card is for a specific good or service or was given away as free.
