Bathurst fire damages four buildings, forcing 50 people out of apartments

BATHURST, N.B. – Four buildings were destroyed or badly damaged in Bathurst overnight when a fire broke out around midnight.

The Birds Eyes View pet store, Au Gourmet Cafe and the Bathurst office of the Canadian Red Cross were three of the buildings damaged in the fire.

There are no reports of any injuries. Crews were still on the scene Saturday morning as they dealt with hotspots.

About 50 people were forced out of the residential apartments above the buildings. The Red Cross says most are staying with friends or relatives.

The Canadian Red Cross has eight volunteers and staff who’ve opened a reception centre and emergency shelter in the Paul Ouellette Room at the K.C. Irving Centre.

More than a dozen people have registered with the Red Cross, said the emergency organization’s spokesperson in a release.

Dan Bedell also said the Red Cross’ Bathurst office received water and smoke damage and will be closed indefinitely, until a new location is found.

Hundreds of homes lost power in the area of the fire for several hours which has since been restores.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
