High-speed chase through 6 B.C. communities ends in 2 arrests

A high-speed chase which blew through six municipalities ended in two arrests in West Vancouver this morning.

The two suspects, who have not been formally charged, led police on a pursuit from Surrey to West Vancouver along Highway 1.

At 1:10 a.m., Surrey RCMP officers were in the area of 10200-block of 155A Street and noticed what they call a “suspicious vehicle” with two occupants.

It turns out the vehicle was stolen from Port Coquitlam and it struck a police vehicle while trying to flee the area after the occupants became aware of the police presence.

The vehicle refused to stop for police and headed out of Surrey, driving westbound on Highway 1. West Vancouver Police officers were able to disable the vehicle using a tire deflation device and the two suspects were arrested.

“The suspects in this case travelled through three RCMP jurisdictions and two municipally policed communities,” says assistant commissioner Dan Malo, head of the RCMP in the Lower Mainland. “Communication between police was seamless throughout, as we kept the safety of the motoring public top of mind. Police worked together trying to stop a reckless driver travelling at high speeds and, through their coordinated efforts, two persons will be potentially facing serious charges.”

Both suspects are currently in custody. The driver, a 25 year old male from Maple Ridge, is known to police.  The passenger, a 23 year old woman from Coquitlam also known to police, is being investigated for possession of a stolen vehicle.

“This was a textbook example of a tire deflation device being used to safely bring a pursuit to an end,” says Cpl. Scotty Schumann with the Surrey RCMP. “Safety of the public and police are always paramount and the tire deflation device is a great tool for police to use in these circumstances.”
